“We tested ski jackets and packs in Europe and snowshoes in Vermont, and last spring our largest crew of experts spent a week at Colorado’s Copper Mountain reviewing the latest skis, snowboards, boots, gloves, and more, including après shoes and casual apparel,” said Outside senior editor Sam Moulton. “And that’s just the start. On snow-packed trails and backcountry slopes across the country, our testers throttled everything from winterized trail runners to telemark and alpine-touring setups.”

The Buyer’s Guide has also devoted a section to gear designed and tested specifically for women. Outside is the first national magazine to give such significant space and resources to a women’s guide of this type.

ARC’TERYX Reaps Industry Awards

Posted in Pack News, Arcteryx on August 30th, 2007

It has been a summer of industry accolade in both North America and abroad for Arc’teryx Equipment, Inc. Recently received awards, collectively celebrating great design, style and function, include the Fredrickshafen OutDoor INDUSTRY AWARD (Silver), the ISPO Performance Award in hardgoods and the Polartec® APEX Design Award.

Arc’teryx took home both the Fredrickshafen OutDoor INDUSTRY AWARD and the ISPO Performance Award after debuting the new R-320 rock harness at the summer trade shows in Europe. Both awards dealt with stiff competition among hundreds of international entries and a tough panel of judges. However, in the end, the R-320 rock harness won over the juries displaying beautiful integration of style, design and technical innovation. One judge, writing for the OutDoor INDUSTRY AWARD panel, noted: “This product changes the way we think about harnesses. Instead of an uncomfortable, often poorly designed belt, here you have an aesthetically pleasing design solution with perfect functionality.”

On the home front, the fall 2007 Griffon Jacket and Hercules Hoody recently won Polartec® APEX Design Awards. Winners in this category are selected based on style, function and fit of the garment as well as the most innovative and appropriate uses of Polartec® fabrics.

Innovation has been the driving force at Arc’teryx Equipment Inc. since its inception in 1990 in Vancouver, Canada. Passionate about advancing performance in the outdoors, Arc’teryx has gained international recognition as the undisputed industry leader for design and construction of harnesses, backpacks and technical outerwear.

Arcteryx Briza 62 Backpack

Posted in Expedition Packs, Arcteryx on July 6th, 2007

The Arcteryx Briza line of backpacks are the little sisters of the famous Arcteryx Bora series of packs. The Briza’s are made with the same design elements and quality materials as the Bora’s, however, they are fashioned specifically to fit a women’s body.

Arcteryx backpacks are known for quality, and the Briza 62 is a multi-day pack of the highest quality for the discerning female backpacker. It will carry your load in comfort with its women’s specific suspension system that uses dual aluminum stays and Thermoformed shoulder and hip-belt straps. The large front pocket, sleeping bag compartment, full-length side zipper and internal laminated pocket keep everything organized and accessible. WaterTight zips and coated 420D fabric add toughness and repel the elements. Like a lot of other big backpacks, the top lid comes off and doubles as a fanny pack for day hikes away from base camp.

The Briza 62 comes in 2 colors, red berry or lime and 3 sizes: Short, Regular and Tall. With interchangeable dual density shoulder straps and interchangeable thermoformed hipbelt, you can dial the Briza 62 in specifically to your body type. The specs of each size are as follow:

Short: Weight: 6 lbs, Volume: 3540 cu in, extends to: 4150 cu in
Regular: Weight: 6 lbs 3 oz, Volume: 3780 cu in, extends to: 4390 cu in
Tall: Weight: 6 lbs 6 oz, Volume: 4030 cu in, extends to: 4640 cu in

ARC’TERYX presents Squamish Mountain Festival

Posted in Pack News, Arcteryx on May 25th, 2007

ARC’TERYX Equipment is proud to present the Squamish Mountain Festival, a grass roots gathering to celebrate the magic of Squamish climbing, bouldering and mountain culture. The event will take place July 13 – 21 in Squamish, British Columbia. The festival will highlight Squamish and climbing within the context of clinics, speakers, competitions, international adventure films, volunteer trail maintenance days, and of course, huuuuge raging parties.

Sprinkled over the eight-day festival is a truly world-class selection of international speakers to present their stories and images from the vertical world. This year’s speakers include: Ron Kauk, Tommy Caldwell, Ines Papert, Kevin McLane, Perry Beckham, Josune Bereziartu, and Will Gadd. The guest speakers will share the nightly limelight with The Squamish Mountain Film Festival, ensuring every evening to be filled with mind-blowing tales of the vertical (and plenty of beer).

Climbing clinics for all ages will be held July 14-15 by certified ACGM guides with assistance from select guest speakers. There will also be a medley of climbing and bouldering competitions open to participation. These competitions are designed to be fun and all-inclusive with categories to suit all age and experience levels.

Arcteryx Naos 55 Backpack

Posted in Weekend Packs, Arcteryx on May 18th, 2007

The Arcteryx Naos series of backpacks is a revolutionary backpack line made of completely waterproof 420ACT VaporTight fabric. The Naos 55 is the flagship of the line which earned both the 2006 Editor’s Choice award from Backpacker Magazine and a 2006 Gear of the Year award from Outside Magazine.

Not only is the Naos 55 fabric waterproof, but all of the seams are sealed, zippers are water-tight and the top opening uses a drybag-style rolltop closure. The only way you’re gear will get wet in this bag is if you forget to close the zippers.

Being waterproof is great, but the Naos 55 excels in being comfortable and organized as well. Radially formed shoulder straps and Radially formed Binary hipbelt offer a nice comfy fit. The binary hipbelt components include an internal polycarbonate torsion support to stiffen the open cell foam padding, offering an excellent load transfer from the circular Load Transfer Disc. This disc freely pivots from the circular housing mounted to the tri-laminate, lightweight Monoframe back panel, moving with the user as they high-step and rotate their back through technical terrain. Organization is easy with zippered large Kangaroo side pocket and zippered smaller pocket on the other side for storage of oft-used items. You can also stuff in a hydration bladder in the reservoir pocket with a waterproof hydroport for the drinking tube. The Naos 55 comes in 3 sizes:

Short: Weight: 4 lbs 6 oz, Volume: 3230 cu in, extends to: 3780 cu in
Regular: Weight: 4 lbs 10 oz, Volume: 3420 cu in, extends to: 3970 cu in
Tall: Weight: 4 lbs 14 oz, Volume: 3600 cu in, extends to: 4150 cu in

Arcteryx was able to keep the weight down on the Naos 55 with the high tech seam sealed construction as well as not adding too many useless straps and clips (just enough side straps to hold skis, tools or other equipment). Since the pack doesn’t get wet, it won’t take on any extra water weight when you end up hiking in the rain. If you live in the pacific northwest or do any hiking/paddling combo trips, this is the pack you need.

Arc’Teryx has set a Retail Price of $500 for the Naos 55 Backpack
