If you’re a snowboarder that enjoys getting into the backcountry, make your trip even more enjoyable by wearing the Burton Ak 30L Backpack on your back. The AK 30L is the big boy of the Burton AK Backpack series (1831 cubic inches). Burton gave the AK 30L both vertical and horizontal board carrying capabilities so you can boot pack or take the snowmobile to your line. Store your shovel and handle in the internal pocket and strap your probe and poles to the outside. There are 5 exterior pockets (1 Lid, 2 front, 2 side) to help you carry everything else you may need, including a fleece lined google/ipod pocket and hydration bladder compartment. But if you’re a real backpack high roller, you’ll clip in the Burton AK 2L Canteen to your shoulder harness for one of the slickest set-ups on the mountain.

Dakine Heli Pro Backpack

Posted in Daypacks, Dakine, Winter Packs on September 30th, 2007

Since it just snowed at my house, I figure it must be time to start talking about winter backpacks for skiing and snowboarding. And if we’re going to talk winter packs, the conversation has to start with the Dakine Heli Pro.

The Heli-Pro from Dakine was one of the original daypacks designed specifcally for skiers and snowboarders. Over the years it has been refined but it still maintains its core values of skiing and snowboarding. First and foremost, you can carry your skis diagonally or your snowboard either vertically or horizontally. The main compartment has plenty of room for extra layers and some lunch, while the larger outer pocket is a perfect place for your shovel blade. The upper outer pocket is fleeced lined for holding your goggles or other valuables. And the pocket on the hipbelt is also fleece lined and is a perfect spot to stash your digital camera. There are dual compression straps to keep your gear stable and an ice axe loop for your shovel handle, or as you may have guessed, an ice axe.

The Heli-Pro comes in 3 different models: Men’s, Women’s and H2O and 2 sizes: 1000 cubic inchesĀ (2 lbs 13 oz) or 1200 cubic inches (3 lbs). The women’s pack uses a contoured harness designed specifically to fit a ladies’s frame. The H20 pack comes with a hydration bladder. Quite frankily, I think CamelBak’s bladders are better than Dakine’s, so I would recommend that you buy the base model for 20 bucks less and order a CamelBak Omega Reservoir to put in it. But whatever Heli-Pro pack you choose, you’ll be smiling from the lifts to the backcountry with it on your back.

Dakine has set a Retail Price of $80 for the Heli-Pro Pack, and $100 for the Heli-Pro H20 Pack

North Face Heckler Backpack

Posted in Daypacks, North Face on June 22nd, 2007

The North Face Heckler Backpack is a larger capacity daypack (2050 cubic inches) that is as comfortable on campus as it is on the trail, as The North Face added plenty of thoughtful touches that keep you organized. The main compartment features a universal sleeve that will hold your laptop or a hydration bladder. If you do put a hydration bladder inside, there is a porthole on the top of the pack to route the hydration tube. There are also small velcro accessory pockets in this main compartment. The front stash pocket has room for your ipod and a few other items, with another porthole so you can stay connected to your mp3 player. The Heckler features side compression straps for load control, but you’ll also find an extra compression strap along the bottom to thoroughly cinch down your internal pack contents. The stitched foam back panel and Ultra-padded shoulder straps provide superior comfort no matter how big of a load you are carrying. The outside of the bag has a reinforced daisy chain and an X-bungee to strap on jackets and other items that you want quick access to. There are also two mesh side pockets that perfectly fit a nalgene waterbottle. It seems as though The North Face thought of everything in designing the Heckler as a multi-use daypack. So if you need a bag for school but one verstaile enough for a couple days on the trail, the Heckler is for you.

CamelBak Helena Hydration Pack For Women

Posted in Daypacks, Hydration Packs, CamelBak on June 9th, 2007

The brand new CamelBak Helena replaces the CamelBak Isis as CamelBak’s women’s specific daypack. The Helena was designed for women through the use of a higher sternum strap and a harness that contours to a ladies body.

The Helena has a 1300 cubic inch capacity, just about the most popular size for a daypack, and is ready to carry all you need for a day of adventure. It has 4 pockets, the main, a front organizer, the hydration sleeve and a small ipod top pocket. The front pocket uses CamelBaks new pull out organizer design, allowing easy access to just what you need. For overflow items, like an extra layer, the Helena has a quick access overflow storage flap with new single pull dual compression straps.

This hydration pack comes with a 100 ounce Omega HydroTanium Reservoir with a lifetime warranty. You won’t find a better hydration bladder anywhere. As an added bonus, the Helena’s hydration pocket is insulated to keep water or other beverages cool for hours.
